Description

The story:

I remember the cool morning mist rising over the Widawa River and the flooded meadows in Wrocław – that morning, everything seemed ordinary. I set out before sunrise, carrying my gear through knee – high grass, determined to make the most of that fleeting hour of silence that photographers cherish so much: that fragile moment when the world seems to hold its breath.

I had heard that the swans nesting by the old willow would take off in the morning, but I had never seen anything like what happened next.

On the far edge of the flooded meadow stood an adult swan, its feathers wet with dew motionless like a sculpture carved in white. I crouched behind a small embankment, pressing the camera to my cheek, breathing slowly and evenly. There was something timeless in its stillness, as if it knew I was there but didn’t mind.

Suddenly, without warning, the swan’s powerful legs began pushing against the shallow water. Ripples spread outward, and its wings struck once, twice each stroke confident and full of majesty. I pressed the shutter. Again. And again.

The swan’s gaze fixed on a horizon only it could see. In that motion, I felt I could sense the line between effort and grace. Later, when I reviewed the series of photos on my laptop, one shot stood out from the rest. It was the moment I would later call “Immortality.” The swan, wings fully outstretched, seemed to defy gravity and time. The flooded meadows reflected the sky so perfectly that it looked as if the bird were rising simultaneously from water and air. In that image, I saw persistence, elegance, and the quiet eternity that nature reveals only in its rarest moments.

When National Geographic awarded that photo, I thought back to that misty morning, the chill on my fingertips, and the hush just before the swan took flight. I realized then that photography isn’t just about capturing what we see – it’s about honoring the invisible pulse that makes a moment feel immortal.
