Description

The story:

I arrived before the light. The lake was still, a sheet of glass holding secrets beneath its surface: stones, branches, the quiet memory of everything. Above it, the mountains loomed like something ancient, watching. Waiting.
I told myself I came here for the sunset. But that wasn’t true. I came because the silence in places like this feels louder than anything else. Because out here, there’s no one to distract me from what follows.

The darkness.

It doesn’t live in the sky or between the trees. It lives in me. It always has. A quiet presence, patient, never forcing its way forward just waiting for me to notice it again. The last light touched the peaks, turning cold stone into fire. For a moment, everything looked like it was waking up. Like the world was choosing light.

I almost believed I could too. But as the colors deepened, I saw my reflection sharpen in the water. Not just my face but the weight behind it. The things I don’t say. The things I pretend aren’t there. The lake didn’t lie. I knelt closer, watching the reflection ripple as my breath disturbed the surface. It felt like standing at the edge of something I could fall into if I stopped pretending.

I didn’t turn away. I let it come. The thoughts, the unease, the old fears I carry like hidden scars. I let them rise, just like the mountains rise out of the earth. The light didn’t chase them off. It just made them visible. And somehow… that felt different. The fire on the peaks softened into gold, then into something quieter. The world didn’t change. But I did, just slightly.

I didn’t run from the darkness. I stood in it. And I saw it for what it was part of me, yes. But not all of me.

The lake settled again.

So did I.
